US Senate seeks to raise tobacco tax to fund child healthcare
Filed Under Political | Leave a Comment
It appears the tobacco lobbyists on the hills are not doing their job quite well, which spells better health for everyone and especially for the children.
The US Senate Finance Committee has voted in an overwhelming majority to pass a bill to significantly increase tobacco tax, to fund a 35 billion dollar increase in SCHIP, a child healthcare program that will eventually cover 10 million children.
The increase in taxes would also mean an increase in the price of cigarettes and tobacco products, probably pricing them out of range of teenagers, and hopefully also reducing the number of cigarettes smoked per smoker.
